Carpal Tunnel Treatment in Chicago

Carpal tunnel treatment in Chicago for numb, tingling or weak hands that wake you at night or make typing, gripping and holding your phone harder. At True Precision Rehab in River North, Dr. Parth Sharma, DC checks the whole path of the nerve, from the neck to the elbow to the wrist, and treats where the pressure actually is.

Most people we see have already tried a wrist brace, rest or a new mouse. Those can help, but if the tingling keeps coming back, something along the nerve is still under pressure.

When carpal tunnel treatment can help

Carpal tunnel syndrome happens when the median nerve is squeezed where it passes through the wrist. It's common in people who type, use a mouse, lift, cook, cut hair or work with tools all day. People most often come to us with:

  • Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index and middle fingers

  • Hands that fall asleep at night and wake you up

  • Shaking out your hands to get the feeling back

  • Dropping things, or trouble with buttons, jars or your phone

  • Aching in the wrist or forearm after a day at the keyboard

  • Tingling that also runs up the arm or seems to start in the neck

Get urgent care first if numbness or weakness comes on suddenly, affects one side of the face or body, or comes with trouble speaking. If the muscle at the base of your thumb is shrinking or your grip keeps getting weaker, see your physician soon.

How carpal tunnel treatment works

The median nerve starts in your neck and runs down the arm into the hand. Pressure anywhere along that path can cause the same tingling in the fingers.

Sometimes the problem is the wrist. Sometimes it's a pinched nerve in the neck, tight muscles at the elbow or forearm, or a mix of these. We test each spot, so your plan treats the cause and not only the wrist.

Our carpal tunnel treatment process

  1. Assessment first. We test feeling, grip strength and reflexes, and check the neck, elbow and wrist for where the nerve is under pressure.

  2. Take the pressure off. Adjustments to the wrist, elbow or neck and soft tissue work on tight forearm muscles, when your exam shows they fit.

  3. Calm the nerve. Nerve gliding exercises and, when it fits, the Stimpod, a non-invasive device we use for nerve pain.

  4. Fix the daily load. Simple changes to your desk, mouse, phone and sleep position, plus grip and forearm exercises you can do at home.

We track your symptoms at every visit and will tell you if your exam points to a referral to your physician or a hand specialist.

Cost of carpal tunnel treatment in Chicago

We don't post one flat price, because the cost depends on a few things:

  • Where the nerve is being pressed and how long you've had symptoms

  • Whether one hand or both hands need care

  • Whether you book single visits or one of our 8- or 12-week programs

  • What your insurance plan covers for the visit

Call (773) 906-4280 and we'll give you a clear number before you book.

Carpal tunnel questions

Do I need surgery for carpal tunnel?

Not always. Many people with mild to moderate symptoms try conservative care first. If your exam shows constant numbness, muscle loss at the thumb or a grip that keeps getting weaker, we'll tell you and refer you for a surgical opinion.

Should I wear a wrist brace?

A brace that keeps the wrist straight at night helps many people sleep without waking up numb. We'll show you how to use one alongside your treatment.

Can carpal tunnel come from my neck?

It can feel the same. A pinched nerve in the neck can cause tingling in the same fingers, and some people have pressure in both places. That's why we check the neck as well as the wrist.
